WACO, Texas – This one hurts. And it should.
That was Baylor softball coach Glenn Moore's postgame message Friday afternoon when his 21st-ranked Bears gave up a seventh-inning lead in a frustrating 3-2 loss to the Iowa State Cyclones, who were held scoreless through the first 13 innings of this series at Getterman Stadium.
"(Two runs) should be enough for our bullpen to hold them," said Moore, whose team fell to 18-12 overall and 2-9 in the Big 12. "I'm disappointed in our offense, but our offense gave us what we needed to win that game, and we didn't pull it out."
Poised to clinch the series after a 6-0 win on Thursday, Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the third on a bases-loaded walk by Shaylon Govan after hits by Sydney Collazos, Abby Wachtendorf and Emily Hott. But the Bears missed a chance to add on when Jaiden Ralston (2-3) struck out cleanup hitter Abi Flores to end the inning.
In the sixth, Presleigh Pilon led off with a single to center and moved up on a pair of groundouts. After Taylor Strain drew a 10-pitch walk to put runners on the corners, Pilon scored a bizarre run when catcher Camille Marin's pickoff throw to third deflected off Leah Cran's bat and far enough away to score the run.
The way Aliyah Binford was pitching, that 2-0 lead looked like it was more than enough. Through the first six innings, she had a five-hit shutout with a career-high-tying 11 strikeouts and had left seven runners stranded.
"She pitched very dominant; 11 strikeouts speaks for itself," said Collazos, who was 2-for-3 with a seventh-inning double for the Bears' only extra-base hit. "They put some balls in play, so I do think it was the right call to make a change. But that's part of the game. And we have to be able to respond to an offense that's not going to quit."
Iowa State (12-17, 3-5) certainly didn't quit. When McKenna Andrews led off the top of the seventh with a first-pitch single up the middle, Moore and pitching coach Britni Sneed Newman opted to go to the bullpen for sophomore RyLee Crandall (8-5), who had tossed a one-hitter with nine strikeouts the night before.
"(Binford) started showing a little fatigue there at the end, above 100 pitches (107)," he said. "And we had someone in the bullpen who had dominated the day before. So, we made all the right calls, I feel. You just tip your hat to them with what they were able to do with RyLee when she came in."
Making adjustments from Thursday's loss, the Cyclones greeted Crandall with three hits by the next four batters and went ahead on Alesia Ranches' two-run, one-out single to left-center that plated Milaysia Ochoa and Olivia Wardlow.
Collazos led off the bottom half of the seventh with a double to the gap in left-center field, putting the potential tying run in scoring position. But pinch-runner Caroline Rowatt never even made it to third base, as pinch-hitter Kaci West popped out to first on a bunt attempt, pinch-hitter Zadie LaValley struck out on three pitches and Hott grounded out to second for the final out of the game.
Game over.
"(The leadoff double) was exciting," Collazos said. "But we as an offense have to be able to finish it. That starts from the beginning of the game. You can rally in the end, but the odds of that, coming back and walking off with a win in the seventh is not high. As a team, I think we need to make adjustments quicker and communicate more so that we don't put ourselves in that position."
The series finale is scheduled for 12 p.m. Saturday and will be streamed by Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

Baylor controlled most of the game, taking a two-run lead into the top of the seventh, but a late-inning comeback for the Cyclones evened the series at 1-1.
THE RUNDOWN
After Iowa State loaded the bases in the top of the first, starting pitcher Aliyah Binford pitched a lights-out performance, striking out two in the first and tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts.
Baylor got on the board first in the bottom of the third, when three singles from Sydney Collazos, Ashlyn Wachtendorf and Emily Hott loaded the bases with one out. Shaylon Govan then drew a full count walk to bring home the Bears' first run.
BU's second run came home in the bottom of the sixth after leadoff batter Presleigh Pilon singled to centerfield and moved to third on back-to-back groundouts. Taylor Strain then walked to put runners on the corners before a throwing error on the Cyclones catcher let Pilon come home from third.
With the 2-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh, BU wasn't able to silence the ISU offense as the Cyclones strung together four hits to plate three runs and take the 3-2 lead.
After reliever RyLee Crandall struck out the final two batters in the seventh, Collazos tried to get a rally going in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff double, but the Cyclones retired the next three batters to secure the win.
