The Bears’ longest match of the season results in a win
WACO, Texas – The Baylor women's tennis team took a break from conference play to faceoff with future Big 12 opponent Arizona State, defeating the Sun Devils, 4-2, at the Hurd Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The No. 32-ranked Bears rise to 9-5 overall with the win while No. 30-ranked ASU falls to 7-4.
The Sun Devils worked quickly on court two in doubles play to hold the early advantage. Partners Liubov Kostenko and Zuzanna Frankowska fended off a comeback attempt on court three, 6-4, to even the battle, when Sierra Berry and Zuzanna Kubacha clinched the point for Baylor with a fiercely competitive 7-6(5) win on court one.
In singles play, Frankowska quickly secured a 6-2, 6-4 win on court six to put the Bears ahead, 2-0. Nearly an hour after Frankowska's win, Arizona State's Emilija Tverijonaite took court four, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Miska Kadleckova fought back after falling in the first set to take the second set, 7-6(6), and won the point for BU after a retirement by #87 Giulia Morlet.
With the Sun Devils trailing, 3-1, Chelsea Fontenel overcame Kostenko to win the point, 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-1, cutting the deficit to one. Four hours from the start of the match passed, and Harvison defeated Marianna Argyrokastriti in a third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(3), to claim the match for Baylor, 4-2.
The Bears continue their homestand and return to conference play this weekend when they host UCF on Friday at 6 p.m. The match has been tabbed BU's annual Go Gold night and fans are encouraged to wear their gold Baylor gear.
