Greer tallies two hits, including a double, as Cougars clinch series
HOUSTON – Baylor baseball (4-10, 0-2) was shutout by Houston (10-4, 2-0) on Saturday night, 8-0, as the Cougars clinched the weekend series at Schroeder Park in Houston.
The Bears mustered just five hits, led by fifth-year senior infielder Mason Greer who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. BU stranded eight runners on base on the night, but was within striking distance until UH pulled away with a four-run seventh inning.
Senior left-handed pitcher Kobe Andrade looked sharp in 2.1 innings of relief, as did redshirt junior righties Drew Leach and Andrew Petrowski, who combined for 1.1 scoreless at the end of the ballgame. Redshirt freshman right-hander Collin McKinney was hit with the loss after going just 3.2, allowing four earned runs on three hits and three walks.
THE RUNDOWN
Houston got on the board first thanks to an RBI double in the bottom of the opening frame and tacked on another run in the third on a sacrifice fly to go ahead 2-0. Baylor's leadoff man had reached in each of the first three innings, though the Bears were unable to cash in.
In the fourth, UH doubled its lead after a two-run home run and chased McKinney from the ballgame. That's when Andrade came on to retire seven of the first eight he faced, picking up four strikeouts.
Baylor left a pair of runners on in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but went down in order in the seventh. That's when Houston broke it open, as a leadoff solo home run kickstarted a four-run frame that include an RBI single and two-run knock later in the inning, making it 8-0.
The Bears were held in check in the final two innings, as UH completed the shutout and clinched the weekend series.

Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On tonight's ballgame…
"We got the leadoff guy on in each of the first three innings, but couldn't get him around. Their lefty was pretty tough, he's a good arm and he gave us some fits. We're not going to win many games like this. We've got to do a better job of getting the ball in play. We're scuffling a bit offensively right now, so that's something we'll have to get addressed."
WHAT'S NEXT
Baylor (4-10, 0-2) looks to salvage the series with Houston (10-4, 2-0) in Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m. from Schroeder Park in Houston.
