In a pregame video Friday night that honored Glenn Moore for his 900th win with Baylor softball, the last highlight was a walk-off 2-1 win over the Texas Longhorns that capped off a three-game series sweep last year.
Just another reminder of Texas getting swept by the Bears, and "you hear a lot about it."
The top-ranked Longhorns (33-6, 12-4) "sent a message" in Friday's series opener at Getterman Stadium, exploding for nine sixth-inning runs in a 14-1, run-rule victory over No. 24 Baylor (22-15, 5-11) before a sellout crowd of 1,250.
What was most frustrating for Moore was that his team "didn't respond" when Mia Scott blasted a two-run home run off the center field scoreboard in the first inning. The Longhorns scored in each of the first four innings, then blew it open with nine runs on six hits and six walks off two relievers in the sixth.
"They sent a message, and they're capable of doing that. And we knew that," Moore said. "But when you respond the way we did – letting runners take extra bases, and I know we had four batters in a row take first-pitch strikes. We were stunned. And again, we didn't respond to that. That's what I'm expecting out of them (on Saturday), to respond."
Texas certainly got to Baylor starter RyLee Crandall (11-6), scoring five runs on 10 hits and one walk with only one strikeout in 5.0 innings. But she threw only 79 pitches, and the Bears only trailed 5-1 when Crandall was replaced going into the sixth.
In its only serious threat of the night, other than a two-out triple by Emily Hott in the second, Baylor finally scratched across a run on a bases-loaded walk by Shaylon Govan in the bottom of the fifth. As the potential tying run, Abi Flores flied out to left to end the threat.
"We showed a little bit of life there in the fifth," Moore said. "We were still in the ballgame, but we made a decision to get RyLee out of there because we didn't think we had enough offense to burn her for the weekend."
Things went from bad to worse in the top of the sixth. West, who got the start in Tuesday's 2-1 win at UTSA for Moore's 900th win at Baylor, retired just two of the first 12 batters she faced. Reese Atwood and Joley Mitchell broke it open with two-run singles, then the Longhorns scored three more on bases-loaded walks.
"Kaci didn't have a good night, of course," Moore said, "but she needs more games for us to expect her to compete against the No. 1 team in the country at a level that we needed at that point in time. Maybe that's a result of overscheduling a little bit, because you don't have enough games where you're able to get her in and have her ready. She threw over 50 pitches (56) in that one inning, and I don't know when I've seen that."
The Bears got pinch-hit singles from Ana Watson and Aliyah Binford in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Paige King hit into a double play to end it.
Hott had half of Baylor's four hits on the night, with the triple in the third and a single to left in the fifth that led to the Bears' only run. Scott and Ashton Maloney paced the Longhorns' 16-hit attack with three hits apiece and combined to drive in four runs and score four more.
With the series shifting to Austin for the next two games, Baylor and Texas will play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, with the games being broadcast by ESPN2 and the Longhorn Network, respectively.
"I want to see us put up a fight," Moore said. "We've got to find a way to get a win out of this, whether it's just being competitive with the No. 1 team in the country or not, but tonight we weren't competitive at all.
WACO, Texas – No. 24 Baylor Softball fell against No. 1 Texas, 14-1, Friday night at Getterman Stadium.
THE RUNDOWN
The Bears fell behind early in the matchup, as Texas plated two runs in the top of the first inning off of a two-run home run. After retiring the next three batters, Baylor wasn't able to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning as they went down in order.
Texas scored one run in each of the next three innings to go up 5-0 by the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sydney Collazos and Shaylon Govan drew walks, as Emily Hott tripled to mark the only baserunners for the Bears through the first four innings.
Baylor catcher Collazos was able to help stop the UT offense in the top of the fourth inning after back-to-back plays at the plate ended the threat.
Baylor held Texas scoreless in the top half of the fifth before plating a single run in the bottom of the inning. After back-to-back walks and a single from Hott, the bases were loaded for Govan, who recorded the bases-loaded RBI walk to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
Texas put up nine runs in the top of the sixth to go up 14-1 and secure their sixth-inning run-rule victory.
Pinch-hitters Aliyah Binford and Paige King recorded singles in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be it for the Bears.
