PROVO, Utah – Baylor Softball dominated BYU, 14-4, Friday night at Gail Miller Stadium to secure the series sweep over the Cougars.
THE RUNDOWN
The Bears put two on in the top of the first after Emily Hott drew a leadoff walk and Presleigh Pilon reached on an error, but that was all as the next three batters were retired.
BYU jumped out to the 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first after a two-run bomb over the wall in left field, but Baylor forced two groundouts to end the inning.
Baylor was able to break the game open in the top of the second when back-to-back walks started the inning before a single through the left side off the bat of Taylor Strain brought home the Bears' first run. Ashlyn Wachtendorf then walked to load the bases before BYU recorded their first out of the inning. With the bases full of Bears, Pilon singled to left field and brought home all three runs to put the Bears up 4-2.
With the two-run lead in the top of the second, Shaylon Govan launched her seventh home run of the season over the wall in left field to put the Bears up 6-2.
After working a scoreless frame in the bottom of the second, both teams went scoreless in the third inning to keep the Bears' lead.
BU decided to add to its four-run lead in the top of the fourth when they put up eight runs to take the commanding lead. Hott led off the inning with a double to left field before Pilon laid down a bunt to the pitcher that allowed the runner to come home from second after a throwing error. Govan then singled to put runners on the corners before Sydney Collazos hit a single to shallow center field, which brought home a run.
With two runs already across in the fourth inning, Ana Watson singled to load the bases before BYU was able to record their first two outs of the inning. Taylor Strain drew a bases-loaded walk to add an RBI to her stat line before a single from Wachtendorf made it a 10-2 game.
Hott, up to bat for the second time in the fourth, launched her first-career grand slam over the scoreboard in right field to put the Bears up by 12 runs.
After working out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bears only allowed the Cougars to score two more runs as they secured the series sweep in a five-inning run-rule.
