Abercrombie Retires as Executive Director of “B” Association

WACO, Texas -- Walter Abercrombie has retired as Executive Director of the "B" Association, following the completion of his twentieth year leading Baylor's athletics letterwinners' organization.
Abercrombie was named to the position in 2004, where he served as the executive director of the athletic department's 4,500-member letterwinners' organization. During his tenure, the "B" Association increased its membership by 50%, its support programs by 70% and its endowments and financial contributions by 400%.
"It has been a great honor to serve fellow Baylor alumni and letterwinners through the "B" Association and I will treasure the friendships and memories we have shared forever," Abercrombie said. "My overall tenure at Baylor spans 23 years and my experiences have been professionally and personally rewarding. Arriving at the decision to retire at this time was not easy, but I feel it is time for me to begin checking a few things off my personal bucket list while I am still able."
Abercrombie established strategic partnerships with university departments and community groups and successfully implemented strategies to increase minority and female membership. In 2006, Abercrombie received Baylor's Distinguished Black Alumni Award.
A Waco native and standout running back at University High School, Abercrombie stayed home to play for head coach Grant Teaff at Baylor University. He went on to become a two-time consensus All-Southwest Conference selection and the university's all-time leading rusher. In his first game, he rushed for 207 yards against No. 12 Texas A&M, breaking the NCAA record for rushing yards in collegiate debut, and he went on to earn 1978 Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year recognition. He led the Bears to the 1979 Peach Bowl and the 1981 Cotton Bowl, finishing atop the Baylor record books in career rushing yards.
Following four years playing for the Bears, Abercrombie was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 12th overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft. He played 84 games over seven NFL seasons, finishing with 3,357 career rushing yards.
