Fifth year student-athlete picks up another academic accolade
IRVING, Texas – Baylor equestrian Jumping Seat fifth-year Maddie Vorhies has been selected as the Big 12 Conference Equestrian Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced Wednesday afternoon by the conference office.
Vorhies is the third athlete in program history to earn the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolade, the first since 2020.
An electrical and computer engineering major from Canton, Ga., Vorhies posted the highest Fences score of the season, scoring a 90 against No. 7 Oklahoma State. The fifth year picked up one Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) nod in Fences with an 88-ride against No. 1 TCU. She also recorded two top-five scores in Flat, including a 90 against No. 2 Auburn and a career-high 93 in BU's 11-8 upset win over No. 5 Georgia.
Carrying a 3.87 GPA, Vorhies earned a fourth-consecutive Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, in addition to being named to the APHA NCEA All-Academic First Team and the NCEA Academic Honor Roll.
The Big 12 Conference established its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2012-13. A recipient is named in each conference-sponsored sport. Every Big 12 institution nominates one individual per sport, with the winners selected by the league head coaches for that sport, who are not allowed to vote for their student-athletes. Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominees must be a junior or senior (athletic and academic standing), have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 20 percent of the team's scheduled contests and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution.
