WACO, Texas – Baylor women's tennis head coach Joey Scrivano added Wenfei Yu, announced on Monday morning.
"We're excited to welcome Wenfei to our team," said Scrivano. "Wenfei is beginning to realize her full capabilities as a tennis player. She possesses a strong work ethic, is team-oriented and most importantly, is highly coachable. I believe she will significantly contribute to our team's success and add valuable depth to this year's squad."
Yu is making her way to Waco after graduating from Beijing No. 20 High School in China for her freshman season in the green and gold.
"I am thrilled to join Baylor University and be part of such a prestigious tennis program," said Yu. "I am excited to work with knowledgeable coaches like Coach Joey and his staff, as well as practice with talented teammates. I am eager to continue growing both as a player and as a person at Baylor. I look forward to starting this new chapter and contributing to the team's success."
With quick success in juniors play in 2023, Yu stacked up career-high rankings of 298 with two wins at J30 Columbo, a pair of second-place finishes at J60 Hong Kong and J60 Giza and a third-round appearance at the J300 Nonthaburi tournament after fighting out of the qualifying bracket. In doubles play, Yu took three wins in her junior campaign: J30 Nis, J30 Columbo and J60 Hong Kong before finalist appearances at J60 Giza and J30 Colombo.
Outside of juniors play, Yu's best WTA singles ranking of 412 came in May.
Yu is the daughter of Jun Yu and Jian Wang and has a younger brother, Wenbin.
Yu joins the Bears after a 17-13 dual-match season that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional. 2024 marked the 18th NCAA Tournament appearance under Coach Scrivano, the program's all-time winningest coach.
