Student-Athletes from Women’s Track & Field, Acrobatics & Tumbling, Football and Men’s Basketball selected as September Champions of the Month.
WACO, Texas – Summer Sergeant (women's track & field), Annie Vorhies (equestrian), Gavin Yates (football) and Jayden Nunn (men's basketball) have been selected as the Student-Athlete Center for Excellence (SACE) September Champions of the Month.

This award recognizes student-athletes who achieve their personal bests in the areas of academic achievement, athletic success, character formation and spiritual growth.

Each of these student-athletes was nominated by a SACE team member based upon their embodiment of each of the four pillars.

As the Baylor SAAC president, Sergeant represented the university at the Big 12 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Leadership Forum this summer. "My journey with academics has been smooth," she said. "Thanks to everyone in SACE, I'm provided with all the help and resources that I need. Being a student-athlete at Baylor means the world."

A senior health science studies major from California, Summer ran on the 4x400-meter relay that had a season-best time of 3:34.71 at the NCAA West regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas. "This is my dream school. Since I was little, I wanted to be a part of Baylor Track, and now I am! I remind myself often that this opportunity is a privilege and should not be taken for granted."

Ryan Amodei, associate director of academic services, said Vorhies "had an amazing month. Not only was she enrolled in the maximum amount of hours for summer (and achieving excellent grades), but she also attended the United Aviate Academy. Annie is an aspiring pilot, so I know it was an amazing experience for her to go on the trip and learn from industry professionals."

Vorhies, a senior communications major from Canton, Georgia, said being a student-athlete at Baylor is "such a privilege." A two-time Big 12 rider of the month, she feels "so honored to have been given the opportunity to be surrounded by such incredible people that help push me to grow and succeed every day."

A senior corporate communication major from Frisco, Texas, Yates is in his fourth season with the football program and was part of the 2021 Big 12 championship. "It is a great privilege being able to get a great education here at Baylor, and it's something I don't take for granted," he said. "I am super grateful to be here, and being a student-athlete at Baylor is a dream come true."

Taking a minimester and a course in each summer session, "which were all very time-consuming and challenging," Gavin did everything in his power to be successful – getting tutoring, checking in at Highers and completing work early.

Nunn, a senior communications major from Flint, Mich., "is always on time, works hard and shows up to his academic sessions with a positive attitude," said learning specialist Alexis Barnes. "He is always willing to come to Highers and do extra work while also fulfilling all of his basketball obligations."

A two-year starter at VCU, Jayden averaged 10.5 points and 2.0 assists while shooting 43.9% from 3-point range in his first season at Baylor. "It feels great to be a student-athlete at Baylor and makes me hold myself to a higher standard," he said. "I couldn't ask for a better opportunity than this. My journey with academics has helped me mature a lot in my everyday life."
