Bears take down Sam Houston and North Texas
WACO, Texas – Baylor Softball swept its Saturday doubleheader on day two of the Baylor Invitational, first taking down Sam Houston 9-1 in run rule fashion before securing the 5-1 win over North Texas at Getterman Stadium.
THE RUNDOWN
GAME ONE
The Bears got off to a hot start against the Bearkats, forcing three-straight groundouts in the top of the first to sit Sam Houston down in order.
Getting the scoring started early, Leah Cran notched a leadoff single before a walk issued to Shaylon Govan and a single from Karynton Dawson loaded the bases. The first run came across when Abi Flores drew a bases loaded walk before Brooklyn carter brought two more home on a single down the left line. The last three runs of the first inning came home on a sacrifice fly from Jensen Vienne and a two-RBI single from Faith Piper.
With the 6-0 lead, Baylor added to its run total in the second when Govan launched a solo shot over the wall in right center.
Sam Houston was able to bring a run across in the top of the fourth but that would be the Bearkats lone run of the game.
Cran and Gigi Lindsey singled, and Govan walked in the bottom of the fourth before a sacrifice fly from Flores put the Bears on top 8-1.
The Bears were able to put the game to bed in the bottom of the fifth when Emry McDonough hit a leadoff single before Jensen Vienne was hit by a pitch and Cran reached on a fielder's choice to put two on for Presleigh Pilon. Hitting the run-rule double, Pilon brought home the Bears' ninth run to go up by eight runs and secure the win.
GAME TWO
Baylor and North Texas were locking in a 0-0 contest for much of the Saturday night cap, before Baylor was able to get on the board first in the sixth inning.
The Bears loaded the bases in the top of the first after a leadoff single from Cran and back-to-back hit by pitches to Govan and Dawson, but BU wouldn't bring any runs home until later in the game.
Starting pitcher Sadie Ross no-hit the Mean Green until the bottom of the fourth inning when a single to right field broke up the streak but the Bears were able to keep UNT off of the board.
Govan led off the top of the sixth with a single to second base before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. With the bases full of Bears, Baylor scored its first run on a wild pitch before a single through the left side from Amber Toven brought home two more runs to put the Bears out from, 3-0.
After walking two in the bottom of the sixth, relieve Lillie Walker came in and recorded two-straight strikeouts to get the Bears out of the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Cran walked before advancing on a fielder's choice and coming home on a Govan double down the right field line. Another hit and a walk juiced the bases for Toven who brought home Govan on a single to center field to put the Bears on top 5-0.
North Texas plated one run in the bottom of the seventh, but a groundout ended any more potential threats, and the Bears secured their second win of the day.
