Bears move to 2-0 in Big 12 play with a 4-0 defeat of Mountaineers
WACO, Texas – No. 14 Baylor women's tennis (11-1, 2-0) defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-7, 0-2 Big 12), 4-0 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Earning its ninth-straight win, the best in the league ahead of UCF's seven, BU swept West Virginia quickly behind a clinch of the doubles point and singles victories that came on Courts Two, Five and Six.
THE RUNDOWN
In doubles, the Zuzanna Kubacha and Wenfei Yu duo came out swinging, defeating the Mountaineer pairing of Julie Bousseau and Tatiana Lipatova, 6-0, in under half an hour. Next up, Sierra Berry and Na Dong, moving up to Court One for the second-straight day, had another quick match, beating WVU's Mille Haagensen and Lyla Byers, 6-2.
Nearing completion, Kennedy Gibbs and Brooke Thompson nearly had a dub over Maja Dodik and Susannah Su on Court Three, but the match was abandoned at 5-3.
Moving to singles play, BU saw a sweep of all six first sets, led by Nanaka Sato's 6-0 decision at the fifth court.
Sato kept the momentum rolling, giving Baylor its first singles win and second team point of the day, 6-0, 6-4 over Byers. Next, Dong, the 80th player in the country, took down Bousseau in the second of three straight-set singles wins, 6-2, 6-3.
Court Six's match between Berry and Su was all the Bears needed, as she put up a pair of 6-4 6-4 sets to take the win and seal the match for BU.
Left unfinished, Kubacha was up, 6-1, 5-5, over Haagensen at Court One, Gibbs was up 6-3, 5-3, over Dodik at Court Three and Yu had the advantage, 7-6(4), 3-1, over Laura Morillo.

On today's match…
"The team did a great job of responding the doubles performance from yesterday [against Cincinnati]. Their energy was way better today. They definitely played smarter doubles matches and had a big improvement, so I am really pleased by that.
On the underclassmen stepping up…
"We were resting Cristina [Tiglea] and Luba [Kostenko] in singles and doubles today, which is not easy to do. Those two have been our two top players, so it's not an easy ask in a Big 12 match. But, it gave an opportunity for those other players who have been patiently preparing all season, and they stepped up to the task. They did a great job, but it was their chemistry and energy that set the tone for the day and that's why we were able to win."
Senior Sierra Berry
On her singles match today…
"It is amazing to be able to be out there for me team and contribute in any way that I can. I really just had the mindset of giving it all that I had and leaving it all out on the court, and that's what I did. I am glad it resulted in a win for my team."
On the team effort today…
"We had a clear plan from our coaches meeting to come out with a lot of energy today. To be very loud and vocal, supporting our teammates and just bringing as much energy as we could. That's what got us through. Even when we weren't playing our best in a few moments, the energy brough us up to take over and win.
