Bears explode for most runs of Thompson era in lopsided victory
Â
The Bears scored 10 runs in the sixth inning, a single-inning high for the Mitch Thompson era and most by the Bears since setting a program record in 2021 (17, vs. Kansas State). Three Bears had multi-hit performances, including redshirt senior outfielder Enzo Apodaca who doubled twice and homered while driving in four runs.
Â
On the mound, six arms combined to hold the Bobcats to just three runs which came on one swing, a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. For the 11th time this year, BU pitchers allowed two walks or fewer, winning the free base battle by a large margin.
Â
THE RUNDOWN
Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after freshman infielder Pearson Riebock drove in Apodaca with a two-out, opposite-field RBI single. However, despite redshirt sophomore left-hander Caleb Jameson striking out the side in the bottom half, Texas State benefitted from a three-run homer to go in front 3-1 after the first frame.
Â
After the two sides traded zeros in the second, BU struck for three runs in the top of the third thanks to redshirt sophomore infielder Travis Sanders' bases-loaded walk and a two-out, two-strike, two-run single from senior outfielder Ty Johnson that made it 4-3.
Â
In the top of the fifth, Apodaca and senior outfielder Wesley Jordan hit back-to-back solo jacks to extend the Bears' advantage to 6-3 after redshirt senior right-hander Andrew Petrowski and freshman righty Camden Clewett each pitched scoreless innings. Another run crossed the plate on a wild pitch to increase the Baylor lead to 7-3.
Â
BU put up 10 runs in the top of the sixth on just four hits, sending 14 men to the plate and having nine-consecutive Bears reach safely with two outs. Johnson and senior infielder Tyriq Kemp each produced two-run singles, while Apodaca cleared the bases with a double. Riebock put the cherry on top of the inning with a two-run triple, marking the largest-scoring inning of the Thompson era.
Â
Redshirt sophomore first baseman Gavin Brzozowski got on the board with a two-run long ball in the top of the seventh, his first of the year, pushing the total to 19-3. That's where things would stay, as senior right-hander Caleb Bunch finished it off with a scoreless inning to complete the run-rule victory.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch ThompsonÂ
On positives outside of the scoreline…
"I liked that we played really good defense. I liked that we continued to throw a lot of different guys on the mound and virtually every guy out there goes and does a nice job. I loved that we took 14 walks or hit batters on offense. We had some at-bats that were fantastic. There's still room for improvement, but you've got to like a 19-3 road win. There's lots of stuff to be happy about tonight."
Â
Redshirt Senior OF Enzo Apodaca
On his approach at the plate…
"Today, I just tried slowing everything down. These past couple weeks, I've been fishing for stuff and gripping at the plate, so today I just tried to simplify things and see the ball down the middle, hit it where it's pitched and not try to do too much. That's baseball, man."
