WACO, Texas – Baylor women's tennis wrapped up the regular season in a 4-0 sweep of TCU on Sunday afternoon at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Baylor (19-4, 10-3 Big 12) earned the doubles point and rolled to three singles wins over TCU (12-10, 7-6 Big 12) to finish off the season before staying in Waco to host the Big 12 Championship next week.
THE RUNDOWN
In one of the most competitive doubles points of the season that spanned a full hour, Baylor was victorious in clinching the first point of the match with a win coming on Courts No. 2 and 3.
Finishing first, TCU's No. 28 ranked do of Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual defeated 30th-ranked Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea, 6-4. Shortly after, Na Dong and Wenfei Yu picked up a win in their first match together, 6-2, on the third court over TCU's Raquel Caballero and Tomi Main.
Coming down to a breaker on Court Two for the doubles point, Sierra Berry and Zuzanna Kubacha, another brand-new doubles pairing for the Bears, pulled out a 7-3 tiebreak win to clinch the point and send the Bears to singles up a point.
Baylor took four first sets to kick off singles play, but it was Court Six's retirement that started the scoring efforts for the green and gold.
Kennedy Gibbs took a solid 6-4 first-set win over TCU's Cayetana Gay before her retirement in the second set for the Bears' first singles point of the afternoon.
Up next, Court Four went to the 107th-ranked Dong, as she defeated Main, 6-4, 6-2, on Court Four in her 12th consecutive singles victory. To clinch the match on her own Senior Day, Kostenko picked up a win on the first court, battling to a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory.
