Dong featured as first Bear Newcomer of the Year since 2011
WACO, Texas – Baylor women's tennis earned four Big 12 Tennis yearly honors, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. Na Dong was recognized as the Newcomer of the Year with a spot on the All-Big 12 Second Singles Team with Liubov Kostenko, while Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea received a First Team Doubles nod.
Dong was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after an impressive 26-3 debut season in Waco, highlighted by a perfect 7-0 singles record in conference play. Her current 14-match singles win streak began on February 21 with a victory over Washington State's Hania Abouelsaad. Of those 14 wins, 11 were decided in straight sets.
The Newcomer of the Year award marks the fifth in program history and the first since Sona Novakova earned the honor in 2011. It also represents the 23rd "of the Year" conference award won by a Bear during the Big 12 era, and the first since 2015.
Kostenko joined Dong on the All-Big 12 Second Singles Team after a 5-5 league slate split between the top two courts in her final campaign as a Bear.
With her second All-Conference nod this season, Kostenko paired up with Tiglea to claim an All-Big 12 First Doubles Team mention in a year that saw an appearance in the NCAA Doubles Championship, a 17-9 overall record, a 14-7 conference schedule and a seven-match winning streak to open the dual-match season.
The Bears open up the NCAA Tournament against Boise State in the Austin Regional on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Texas Tennis Center.
