WACO, Texas – Giving up multiple runs in 12 of her first 17 appearances this season, Baylor redshirt freshman Lexie Warncke has struggled with her confidence.
But she got a little of that back Wednesday night, throwing five shutout innings and combining with freshman Sadie Ross on a two-hitter in the Bears' 6-0 win over the UTSA Roadrunners at the Big Getty.
"It felt really good to feel it out, kind of trust my defense and just go out there with my team and have fun," said Warncke (6-6), who picked up her second win in five days. "Throwing my ball up there, I'm not scared at all. I know my defense is behind me and they've got my back."
Baylor (19-21), which has won six of its last seven games, has a chance to get back to .500 with a two-game weekend series against ACU.
"It took us a while to come out of it," Baylor head coach Glenn Moore said, "but I think we're starting to see what we're capable of doing."
From the second inning on, Warncke was working with a lead, which "allowed her to relax a little bit more and feel free to make a mistake or two without it costing us." Moore said.
"When she's been pitching with a short leash, she knows if she walks a batter or two and we don't have the runs to cover that, then she's pitching under a great deal of pressure," he said. "She's still not back to where she was or where she can be. So, these games are important, that we are able to let her make a mistake or two and it not cost us or force to make a pitching change."
The Bears struck first in the bottom of the first inning, when Brooklyn Carter singled, moved up to third on a passed ball and scored on Presleigh Pilon's two-out bunt single.
Baylor broke it open with a four-run second inning on singles by Karynton Dawson, Ashlyn Wachtendorf and Carter, two errors by UTSA (15-23) and a sacrifice fly by Shaylon Govan.
Carter, who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, credits hitting coach Steve (Hoot) Johnigan for the team feeling "much more confident" at the plate.
"He's been with us after practice, during practice and even when we want to go hit on our own," Carter said. "Coach Hoot is always there when we need him. We have to thank Coach Hoot and Coach Moore for their confidence in us."
Working an efficient five innings, Warncke threw a total of 73 pitches, walking three and giving up singles in the third and fifth. Jaylen Prichard broke up a no-hitter with a single up the middle with one out in the third.
"I had some rough outings, but I think they made me stronger in the long run," Warncke said. "It makes these games easier and gives me confidence going back out there. With the defense behind me, it always helps to go out there with them behind me. I know they've got my back."
The Bears added another run in the third on singles by Pilon and Dawson but missed an opportunity to blow it open when Turiya Coleman grounded out with the bases loaded.
Moore used the last few innings to dig deep into his bench, subbing out six of the eight fielders and using freshman Sadie Ross in relief. Facing one batter over the minimum, Ross didn't allow a hit while walking one and striking out another in her two innings of work.
"You have a lot of coaches that never put in their bench," Moore said. "Fortunately, for us in this sport, we have the re-entry that gives us the option of being able to put your starters back out there if things start going the wrong direction. So, I rely on that a little bit when I start making decisions, and it gives me the freedom to put some kids out there."
Pilon also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI.
Shortened to a two-game series, Baylor and ACU (11-29) will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday, with both games streamed on ESPN+.

THE RUNDOWN
Baylor started the game on a strong note holding the Roadrunners off after allowing a walk in the first inning. In the bottom half of the first, the Bears got on the board after a leadoff single from Brooklyn Carter who scored after a stolen base, a passed ball and a bunt single from Presleigh Pilon.
Getting things going in the second inning, Karynton Dawson reached on an error and Lexie Warncke singled before Dawson advanced to third on a throw to put runners on the corners for the Bears. With an infield single from Ashlyn Wachtendorf, the Bears brought home their second run before a bunt single from Carter loaded the bases. A two-run throwing error by the Roadrunners put BU on top 4-0 before a deep sacrifice fly from Shaylon Govan made it a 5-0 game.
Working out of a jam in the top of the third after UTSA recorded its first hit of the game and the Bears issued a walk, a 2-4-6-8-5 throw down stopped the runner from advancing to third base.
Pilon led off the bottom of the third with a single and stole second before a groundout advanced her to third base. An infield single from Dawson scored Pilon before a hit-by-pitch and single loaded the bases, but that would be all for the Bears in the third.
The Bears recorded a leadoff strikeout and sat the Roadrunners down in order in the fourth before allowing UTSA its second hit of the game in the fifth inning.
It was a quiet rest of the game for both sides as the Bears only allowed a walk in the top of the seventh before Sadie Ross shut the door with a strikeout to gibe Baylor the 6-0 win.
