Bears pick up seven conference honors
IRVING, Texas – Baylor softball's Presleigh Pilon and Shaylon Govan were named the Big 12 Softball Defensive Player and Scholar Athlete of the Year, respectively, highlighting the selections announced Wednesday morning by the league office.
As a unanimous First-Team All-Big 12 honoree as well, Govan was joined by Lillie Walker who picked up second-team honors. The Big 12 awards were voted on by the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
In addition to her third-straight first-team recognition, Govan was named to the All-Defensive team as the league's best first baseman. Setting a Baylor all-time record in career-walks, she is also on pace to set numerous Baylor records in batting average, on base percentage and walks.
As a two-time All-American and an Academic All-American, Govan was also named the league's Scholar Athlete of the Year. This marks the first Scholar Athlete of the year honor for the Bears since 2015. Govan sports a perfect 4.0 in her public health Master's program, while also leading the conference in overall batting average (.422) and conference-only games (.453), which granted her the Big 12 Batting Champion.
Pilon picked up Baylor's second Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honor, joining centerfielder Jessie Scroggins (2017), while also earning a spot of the All-Defensive team as the league's best second baseman. She is currently ranked second nationally in assists with 143, while making unbelievable plays all season and helping contribute to the Bears' 27 double plays. She has a .992 fielding percentage with 48 putouts and 72 assists in conference play.
Walker is a staple in the circle for the Bears this season, picking up second team honors while ranking in the top five in conference play in wins (8), innings pitched (96.1), strikeouts (49), appearances (21), games started (15), shutouts (3) and complete games (9). This marks the graduate transfer's first all-conference honor of her career.
No. 8 seed Baylor opens play at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship with a first-round matchup against No. 9 seed Kansas at 2:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, May 7.
