WACO, Texas -- Sawyer Robertson threw for 250 yards and three scores and
Bryson Washington went over 100 yards rushing for the third-consecutive time but Arizona State clipped Baylor on a 43-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the defending league champion Sun Devils to a 27-24 win on Saturday night at McLane Stadium.
Baylor (2-2, 0-1 Big 12) could not overcome nine ASU points allowed on three turnovers in the game, as Arizona State (3-1, 1-0 Big 12) used the game-winning field goal from Jesus Gomez to sneak past the Bears in a thriller at McLane Stadium.
The Bears turned the ball over three times, two on a fumble and one on an interception, with each turnover handing ASU the ball in prime field position, including twice inside the BU 40-yard line. The Devils turned that into three field goals, sparking the difference in the game.
Baylor saw another strong outing from Robertson, who completed 25-of-39 passes for three TDs, with one interception. Washington had his ninth-career 100+ yard rushing game, and his third of 2025, toting it 17 times for 111 yards.
Josh Cameron had six catches for 65 yards and tight end
Michael Trigg hauled in two TDs on five catches and 71 yards.
The Bears totaled 357 yards of total offense, including 107 on the ground. ASU went for 400 yards with 221 passing and 179 rushing.
The Bears will return to action, traveling to face Oklahoma State (1-2, 0-0 Big 12), on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2 and the Baylor Sports Media Network.
Baylor opened the game with a speedy 33 yards on three completions from Robertson before a fumble turned the ball over at the ASU 42.
The Sun Devils took the ball 45 yards on 14 plays to sink a 31-yard field from Jesus Gomez for a 3-0 lead.
The Bears answered with a 52-yard drive of their own, culminating in a career-long 53-yard field goal from
Connor Hawkins.
After the Bears got a stop, BU was thwarted on a fourth-down try inside the 30-yard line of ASU, and the Sun Devils used that for a 13-play, 83-yard drive for a one-yard QB sneak into the endzone from Sam Leavitt.
Baylor evened the game with 3:08 left in the half, marching 73 yards on seven plays, finishing the scoring drive with an eight-yard pass from Robertson to
Kole Wilson for a 10-10 game at the break.
ASU took its lead to 16-10 with a pair of Gomez field goals, entering the fourth quarter.
The Bears responded to take their first lead of the game, as Robertson found
Michael Trigg for his first score of the game, as the senior pushed his way in from one yard out.
With 5:29 left in the game, ASU marched 84 yards on seven plays, with Jordyn Tyson and Leavitt connecting on a 19-yard TD, with the pass to Tyson for the two-point conversion putting the Devils seven-points up.
Baylor rallied to tie the game on a 64-yard drive that saw Trigg rumble in from 33 yards out to even the game at 24-24.
With 1:52 left in the game, the Devils embarked on a game-winning drive, starting at their own 25-yard line. ASU chipped away and when facing 3
rd and 4 from their own 44-yard line, completed a three-yard pass to Tyson. Baylor's defender was whistled for a personal foul penalty, allowing ASU to advance the ball into field goal range. Eleven rush yards later, on five plays, set up Gomez for the game winner that he drilled between the uprights from 43 yards out.
