Laurenz Colbert, Success Oyibu make indoor debuts at K-State meet
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After opening the indoor season with back-to-back in-state meets, Baylor track and field will go out of state for the DeLoss Dodds Invitational, which begins Friday at Kansas State's Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track.
Friday's action begins with the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon at 10:45 a.m., with field events starting at 3:45 p.m. and the women's 800 meters kicking off the track events at 4:15 p.m. The meet has an old Big Eight feel to it, with Kansas, Iowa State, Nebraska, Oklahoma and select athletes from Oklahoma State joining Baylor and the host K-State team.
"The thing I'm looking forward to going into the meet is that we'll get to see some ore conference schools and just see where we match up, where we're lacking and where we're strong," Baylor head coach Michael Ford said. "For me, it's just trying to get us going in the right direction. It's just trying to figure out who our 26 (athletes) are that we're going to bring to (the Big 12 Championships)."
Making their season debuts this week in the 60 and 200 meters are fifth-year senior sprinter Laurenz Colbert, who was granted a waiver request from the Big 12 office, and first-semester freshman sprinter Success Oyibu.
An outdoor All-American as a freshman in 2022 and an NCAA Indoor qualifier in the 200 two years ago, Colbert was fifth in the 100 and third in the 4x100 relay at last year's Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
"He's probably had his best fall since he went to nationals two years ago," Ford said of Colbert.
Boasting personal bests of 11.42 in the 100 meters and 23.56 in the 200, Oyibu signed with Baylor in November after winning the 200 and finishing second in the 100 at the CAA U-18/U-20 African Championships.
"I just wanted to get a little more familiar with her and get her used to running indoor, because she has never run indoor," Ford said of Oyibu. "She's a phenomenal sprinter, but she's used to running the 100, not the 60. The issue in the 200 is whether she can maneuver the turns.
"When we took her to Tech, we worked her out on (the outside lanes), just to get her familiar with it, because she was like, 'Man, I feel like I'm going to fall. It's just learning how to keep her feet moving and keep them underneath her, but I think she can be big-time for us."
The 19th-ranked Baylor women boast a pair of national leaders in pole vaulter Molly Haywood (15-0) and Tiriah Kelley in the 200 meters (school-record 22.56 seconds). Haywood was named the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Week after the Bears' last meet at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station, while Kelley earned weekly honors after the season-opening Corky Classic.
Returning all-conference performer Logan Todorovich will be joined by her sister, freshman Madilyn Todorovich, and sophomore Kiara Wesseh in the women's five-event pentathlon, while sophomore Dexter Brice and freshman Kingston Williams are entered in the men's seven-event heptathlon.
Live results for the two-day meet are available at DELOSS DODDS INVITE.
