Bears score in eighth, ninth and 10th innings to secure highest-ranked win of Thompson Era
HOUSTON – Baylor baseball secured its highest-ranked win of the Mitch Thompson era on Friday, coming from behind to defeat No. 11 Ole Miss, 6-5, at the 2026 BRUCE BOLT College Classic at Daikin Park in Houston.
The Bears erased a 3-1 deficit on the heels of redshirt freshman outfielder Hunter Snow's go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the eighth. Then, BU knotted the ballgame up at 5-5 in the top of the ninth as junior catcher JJ Kennett singled in fifth-year senior outfielder Ty Johnson. In the 10th, redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong drove in sophomore infielder Pearson Riebock to put Baylor ahead 6-5.
From there, fifth-year senior right-handed pitcher Caleb Bunch shut it down with his second scoreless inning of the night and earned his third win of the year.
Senior southpaw Stefan Stahl was brilliant for the Bears in his second start of the year, racking up a career-high eight strikeouts in just four innings while allowing one run on three hits and a walk.
THE RUNDOWN
For the seventh time in nine games, Baylor scored first after getting traffic on the bases early and often against Ole Miss starter Hunter Elliott. Elliott walked two and hit one before an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Snow marked the ballgame's first tally.
The Rebels answered back in the bottom of the second, knotting the scoreline at 1-1 with a pair of hits and thanks in part to a Baylor fielding error. However, Stahl would settle in and record back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat in the second. He surpassed his career high with his fourth and fifth strikeouts in the third inning, then struck out the side around a double and a two-out walk in the fourth to move his total to eight punchouts.
Meanwhile, Elliott also settled in against the Bears' lineup and recorded eight straight outs via the strikeout across the middle innings, increasing his total to 11 punchouts through five frames.
That was all for Stahl, as he handed it off to junior righty Charlie Atkinson in the bottom of the fifth. That's when a two-run home run gave the Rebels their first lead of the day at 3-1.
In the top of the sixth, Ole Miss also turned to its bullpen as Hudson Calhoun retired each of the first eight batters he faced until Armstrong worked a two-out walk in the eighth. That was all the spark the Bears needed, as redshirt junior infielder Travis Sanders smashed a two-out single before Snow's big swing made it 4-3.
Once again, Ole Miss responded with a solo home run in the home half. Three batters later, a sacrifice fly gave the Rebels a 5-4 lead.
But the Bears wouldn't go away, as Johnson ripped a one-out double and scored on Kennett's RBI single to even things back up at 5-5 in the top of the ninth.
After Bunch stranded a pair of Rebels in the bottom half, the game went to extras and each side would start their offensive inning with a runner on second base. For the Bears, Riebock was placed on second and wheeled around to scored on Armstrong's RBI single up the middle. That would be all for BU in the top of the 10th, then Bunch retired the Ole Miss side in order to shut the door and seal the deal on Baylor's first ranked win of the season.

QUOTABLE
Head Coach Mitch Thompson
On his club's resilience…
"Lots of fight, lots of heart. Showed up, showed up and competed their tails off. That's what we knew that they would do and we're proud of them. We were fighting, fighting, fighting and their guy was beating us all day long. We finally got a couple guys on and got the big-time swing. I'm proud of all the guys. It's a big-time win for us."
Redshirt Freshman OF Hunter Snow
On his go-ahead home run in the eighth inning…
"It was an exciting game. Leading up to that moment, you know, we were down a few runs. Had a guy throwing 95 on the mound, so you've got to catch up to it somehow. And I was just thinking to get the head of the barrel out, and that's what I did, and the ball flew man."
Senior LHP Stefan Stahl
On his performance on the mound…
"It was a ton of fun. Honestly, Sned just did a great job pitch calling. It was just up to me to execute. I trust Sned so much and if he thinks I've got it, then it gives me the confidence to execute that pitch. I felt really good and in command of all my pitches."
