Appel records eagle and three birdies through first nine holes of 2nd round
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Getting off to a hot start in the second round, Baylor men's golf moved up two spots to fifth through the first 27 holes on Sunday at The Michael A. Marino Classic at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club.
Led by Jonas Appel and Sam Dossey, the Bears shot 8-under on the front nine of an incomplete second round and moved up two spots to fifth at the halfway point at 6-under. Liberty and Louisville are at the top of the standings at 12-under and 11-under, respectively, followed by North Carolina State (10-under) and the host Coastal Carolina team (7-under).
With rain expected on Monday, the teams will try to get in the remaining nine holes for the second round with a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start before wrapping up the 54-hole tournament with the third round on Tuesday.
Tied for seventh with Coastal Carolina at 2-over 290 in Sunday's opening round, Baylor moved up two spots with a combined nine birdies and an eagle in the first half of the second round. Appel had three birdies and eagled the par-5 eighth hole to shoot 4-under 32 on the front nine of the second round and moved up 33 spots to a tie for 27th at even-par.
Dossey followed up an even-par 72 with a bogey-free 33 on the first nine holes of the second round and is tied for 11th at 3-under. UConn transfer Alex Heard is tied for 14th at 2-under, with Appel and Auburn transfer Evan Vo tied at even-par.
Nolan Harper of Florida Gulf Coast and Cooper Claycomb are tied for the 27-hole lead at 7-under, with Michigan's RJ Arone and Fionn Dobbin of Kansas State a stroke back.
