MARIDOE FINAL RESULTS
CARROLLTON, Texas – On a day when winds got the best of the field, the Baylor men tied seventh-ranked Oklahoma State for the low final round on Tuesday and moved up a spot to finish third at the Maridoe Collegiate.
The Bears shot 11-over-par 299 on the par-72 layout at Maridoe Golf Club and a 54-hole total of 33-over 897, finishing behind only the Cowboys (11-over, 875) and ninth-ranked Arizona State (29-over, 893) in the 13-team tournament. North Texas finished fourth as the host team (35-over, 899), followed by 15th-ranked Oklahoma (904) and No. 16 Alabama (907).
"I'm very proud of the guys," interim head coach Ryan Murphy said. "Playing Maridoe in some strong wind is a bit of a survival test. All facets of your game, including your patience, gets fully tested."
Recording his second top-10 finish out of four spring tournaments, UConn transfer Alex Heard closed with a 1-over-par 73 and finished sixth outright at 2-over 218, just three shots off the pace set by co-winners Ethan Fang and Preston Stout of Oklahoma State (1-under, 215).
"Alex's week was just outstanding," Murphy said. "Anytime you've got a chance to get the victory on the last day, you've played some great golf for the week. Alex's time is coming. I'm super proud of his effort today and this week."
In the ultimate roller-coaster ride of a round, Heard had five birdies, three bogeys, one double-bogey and just one par in his first 10 holes before pars on seven of his last eight holes.
Senior Jonas Appel, one of only four players in the field of 75 to shoot below par, had much less of an adventurous round in his 1-under 71. He had nine-consecutive pars on the front, birdies on 10, 12 and 17 and bogeys sandwiched between at 13 and 14.
"Jonas played some stellar golf this week as well," Murphy said of Appel, who tied for eighth at 4-over 220, his second top-10 of the season "Today's round, specifically, is up there with the best rounds of the year for the Bears. Under par on a very difficult course, with very difficult conditions today, was simply terrific."
Sam Dossey and Evan Vo had the other scoring rounds on Tuesday at 77 and 78, respectively, and tied for 42nd at 17-over 233, while Davis Ovard shot 81 in the final round and tied for 29th at 15-over 231.
Freshman Tyler Sanford, playing as an individual, opened with a 9 on the par-4 16th hole in the shotgun start en route to a 13-over 85 and a tie for 61st at 23-over 239.
In their final tune-up before the Big 12 Championship, the Bears will travel to Bridgeport, W. Va., for the Mountaineer Invitational April 13-14 at Pete Dye Golf Club.
