BIG 12 FINAL RESULTS
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Finishing eight spots above their seeding, the Baylor men shot 10-over 290 in Wednesday's closing round and tied for seventh with 23rd-ranked BYU at the Big 12 Men's Golf Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
UConn transfer Alex Heard was in the top 10 before his only bogey of the day at the par-4 18th hole to shoot 1-over 71 for the day, tying for 11th at 1-over 281 to earn Allstate All-Tournament honors. Jonas Appel and Davis Ovard were just outside the top 25, shooting 5-over 285 and tying for 26th.
The only team in the top nine ranked outside the top 50 nationally, Baylor shot 18-over 1,138 in the 72-hole tournament, matching BYU's 10-over 290 in the final round. Fifth-ranked Oklahoma State, the wire-to-wire winner, finished at 10-under 1,110 to beat 20th-ranked Arizona by eight strokes.
TCU was third at 1-under 1,119, followed by sixth-ranked Texas Tech (+9, 1,129), Kansas (10-over, 1,130) and Utah (15-over, 1,135) in the 16-team tournament. Tenth-ranked Arizona State tied for the best round of the day at even-par 280 and finished three shots behind Baylor and BYU at 21-over 1,141.
"I'm proud of our guys," interim head coach Ryan Murphy said. "Lots of fight this week, and they handled a difficult golf course very well. We had some really good rounds from Davis, Alex, Jonas and Evan (Vo)."
Narrowly missing another top-25 finish, Appel had 15 pars in a round of 1-over 71 and tied for 18th in the field with 46 pars on the week. Ovard, who had a pair of sub-par rounds this week, had five of his team-high 13 birdies in an up-and-down final round of 5-over 75.
Vo, an Auburn transfer, birdied two of his final five holes to shoot 3-over 73 and tie for 32nd at 7-over 287. Senior Sam Dossey, playing in likely his last collegiate tournament, birdied the last hole to shoot 6-over 76 after being subbed out in the middle two rounds.
"I'm sad to be losing our three seniors, as there is a lot of leadership and experience there," Murphy said of Appel, Vo and Dossey. "They have been a privilege to coach, and we'll do our best to fill their shoes."
Baylor finishes the season with a 79-73-1 head-to-head record – meeting the requirement to finish above .500 – but the Bears were ranked 93rd coming into the Big 12 tournament. NCAA selections, including at-large individuals, will be announced next Wednesday, May 6, on the Golf Channel.
