Discounts and Free Items Prohibited

Please be aware that NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from receiving any discount that is not available to the general student population or general public on any sort of item or service. Student-athletes may take advantage of regularly advertised sales open to the public, but student-athletes are not permitted to receive special discounts or treatment. Please note that student-athletes cannot receive any military discount or employee discount that the student-athlete is not entitled to.

NCAA Bylaw 16.02.3 - Definition of Extra Benefit.
An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution's athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete's relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their relatives or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution's students or their relatives or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., international students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability. (Revised: 1/10/91)

NCAA Bylaw 16.11.2.2.1 - Free or Reduced-Cost Services.
An athletics representative may not provide a student-athlete with professional services (for which a fee normally would be charged) without charge or at a reduced cost except as permitted elsewhere in this bylaw. Professional services provided at less than the normal rate or at no expense to a student-athlete are considered an extra benefit unless they are available on the same basis to the general student body.
