Baylor Athletes Participate in H-E-B's Feast of Sharing

Dec. 11, 2003

WACO, Texas - Baylor football and volleyball student-athletes participated in H-E-B's Feast of Sharing at the Waco Convention Center on Wednesday, sharing their time and service with the Waco community to make the event a success.

Baylor athletes passed out goody bags to everyone, cleared tables, visited with families and played with children during the holiday occasion.

Kassie Mercer, H-E-B's representative and Feast of Sharing coordinator, was pleased with the athletes' help.

"Little kids always love to see athletes from Baylor," she said, "and these guys did a great job. They were a huge help."

H-E-B sponsors Feast of Sharing for the Waco community every year. Pizza Hut, KWTX, Dr Pepper, Baylor Athletics and other organizations and businesses also support the feast.

Mercer explained that Feast of Sharing is open to the public, but their main target is needy families and the homeless.

"We hit a record and served over 8,500 plates of food," she said, "and hopefully, people who really needed a good, hot meal got one today."

A good, hot meal is not the only gift the people received. Christmas music and entertainment, face painting and crafts and flu shots were provided to everyone at Feast of Sharing.

Stella Odion, a member of the Baylor volleyball team, helped with arts and crafts.

"I helped little kids decorate Christmas cards," she said. "I had so much fun, but I think I got more glitter on the table than on the cards!"

Baylor football players, including Michael Trice, cleared tables and passed out goody bags filled with fruit and candy.

"Everyone got a goody bag," he said. "It felt good to help out."
