Athletic Facilities Construction Update

Basketball

  • Prior to the 2000-01 season, the locker room was expanded and renovated, new offices were built for the coaches and staff, the audio-visual center was remodeled and upgraded, the weight room was renovated with new equipment, and a new court design was put in place.
  • The athletic department is investigating the feasibility of buying a new video board for the Ferrell Center.
  • The department is also looking into minor renovations to the women's basketball locker room, including new lockers and new carpet.

Football

1. North End Zone Complex

  • Work is nearly complete on renovations to the team locker rooms and weight room area at Floyd Casey Stadium. An addition is being made to the North End Zone complex to house the expansion.
  • What has been the training room will become an addition to the strength and conditioning area, increasing the room to approximately 12,000 square feet.
  • The training room will be moved to the current equipment room, while the equipment room moves to the existing locker room.
  • A new locker room will be built in the expansion, increasing the size from 3750 square feet to 7000 square feet.
  • The construction is scheduled for completion by the end of July.

2. Grant Teaff Athletic Plaza

  • Construction is underway on the plaza, which honors longtime football coach Grant Teaff. The plaza is being built outside the entrance on the west side of Floyd Casey Stadium at the entrance to the luxury suites and press box. The plaza, which will be similar to the Dutch Schroeder Athletic Plaza at the Turner Athletic Complex on University Parks Drive, will provide an aesthetically-pleasing entrance to the stadium for those coming in off Valley Mills Drive. 3. Practice Fields

  • The football practice fields to the southeast of Floyd Casey Stadium were renovated, focusing on the resodding of the fields. That process was completed in late June..

4. Other plans

  • Interior redecoration is nearly complete on the Bear Foundation and Athletic Media Relations offices on the east side of the stadium..
  • The athletic department is also looking into a long-term master plan which would include:
    • repaving all existing parking lots and paving new lots around Floyd Casey Stadium,
    • adding restrooms and improving the main concourses of the stadium,
    • a new video board,
    • an ornamental steel fencing to replace the current chain link fencing,
    • and major landscaping around the stadium.

Golf

  • Ground-breaking took place in January on a public golf course in southwest Waco which will serve as a home course for both the men's and women's golf teams. As part of the course, named Bear Ridge Golf Course, the Baylor teams will have their own facility which will house locker rooms, team meeting areas, coaches' offices, and an indoor practice area.
  • Ground was broken on the facility in a ceremony June 2. Both the course and the facility are expected to be complete by the end of October.

Soccer

  • The area surrounding Betty Lou Mays Soccer Stadium will be landscaped to provide for a more aesthetically-pleasing entry and view.

Softball

  • Getterman Stadium has received a new, wooden outfield fence to replace the previous chain link fence. The new fence matches the one at the Baylor Ballpark.
  • The field was also resodded in time for the 2001 season.
  • Lighting in the bullpens and batting cage at Getterman Stadium have been improved.
  • The coaches and team will move into their new offices and locker room in the clubhouse at the Baylor Tennis Center by the end of the summer.

Tennis

  • Phase I of the Baylor Tennis Center was completed in late April, in time to host the 2001 Big 12 Tennis Championships. Phase I includes the six outdoor courts and the clubhouse building.Click here to see photos of the construction.
  • Phase II, the three stadium courts, was also completed in mid-April.
  • Landscaping for the area surrounding the courts and clubhouse is currently in the architects' hands. Landscaping is set to begin by the first of August.
  • Phase III of the project, the indoor facility, is in architectural design stages.
  • Fundraising is currently in progress for Phases III-IV. For more information, check out the tennis facility page.

Track

  • Renovation will begin by the August 1st on an existing building at the east end of the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex. When complete, the building will house locker rooms, and a team meeting room.
  • The project is expected to be completed by November 1st.
