Trevor Johnson
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Trevor Johnson brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and a coach, to his first season at Baylor. In coming to Waco, he is reunited with his collegiate coach and mentor, Ryan McGuyre. Johnson played for McGuyre at California Baptist (CBU) from 2002-2005 and he served on his CBU staff as an assistant coach in two different stints from 2007-2011.
"I have been a part of seeing Trevor win a national championship as an athlete. We have won championships together as coaches, and Trevor has gone on to win more championships," said Baylor head coach Ryan McGuyre. "Wherever he goes, the program wins. Having started a program from scratch and winning a championship as a head coach in its first year is incredibly impressive. His experience as a head coach has prepared him for the demands involved in leading our Bears to the highest levels of success. He is a relentless recruiter and relates extremely well to the athletes. His ability to train and experiences as both a coach and athlete provide invaluable knowledge to our staff. Having already worked with Trevor I am confident the chemistry we will have as a staff will carry over into the team. His integrity and love for Lord makes him the perfect fit for Baylor University. I could not be more please or blessed to have such a man join us in this journey toward competitive greatness."
Johnson comes to Baylor after head coaching stints for both the men's and women's programs at Concordia University Irvine where, in the program's first year of existence, he led the men's team to the 2013 NAIA national championship. Johnson was selected NAIA Coach of the Year, NAIA All-Tournament Coach and MAMVIC National Coach of the Year. In addition, he was selected as the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2012, Johnson was selected to the AVCA 30 Under 30 list. In 2014, his women's program posted a record of 34-4 and reached the NAIA national tournament.
A four-year starter at former Golden State Athletic Conference member California Baptist, Johnson left as the career leader in assists, and returned to help coach the player who would break his career record in the spring of 2011.
While an assistant coach at California Baptist, Johnson helped guide Lancers' men's volleyball team during its 2011 NAIA National Invitational championship, which included wins over ranked NCAA Division I foes UC Irvine (No. 2), Stanford (No. 3) and UC Santa Barbara (No. 6). On the women's side, Johnson's assistance resulted in the Lancers' runner-up finish at the 2007 NAIA National Championships. He also served as the top assistant for the 2008 team that finished third at the tournament.
Throughout two stints at California Baptist (2007-09, 2010-11), Johnson assisted in the development of three NAIA All-Americans and one GSAC Player of the Year honoree, while helping produce two AVCA NAIA Player of the Year recipients on the men's side.
Johnson is the only person in the history of NAIA Volleyball to win a championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach. In 2014 he coached three NAIA All-Americans and a NAIA Freshman of the Year.
A four-year starting setter at California Baptist, Johnson was named to the 2004 NAIA National Invitational All-Tournament Team, as the team won its first of back-to-back titles, repeating in 2005. Johnson, who garnered league MVP honors twice as a prep and was named 2000 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Player of the Year in the season that his team won a state title, trained with the U.S. Men's National Volleyball team in 2005-06.
He began his coaching career in 2006 as graduate strength and conditioning coach at Cal State Fullerton. Johnson went on to complete his master of science in kinesiology with a concentration in strength and conditioning at Cal State Fullerton, finishing the degree in 2009. He left the Titans in 2009 and served as assistant men's volleyball coach at Long Beach City College, then worked the 2010 season as director of women's volleyball operations at Cal State Fullerton.
Johnson and his wife, Jane, have a 6-year-old son, Riley, and a 2-year-old daughter, Chloe.
