CHARLES BENSON, Houston, Texas (Football, 1979-82) – 2009
Considered one of Baylor’s best defensive ends in program history, Benson was a three-time unanimous All-Southwest Conference pick and earned All-America honors from the Newspaper Editors Association when he tied a school record with 20 tackles for loss and registered 8 ½ sacks.
Nearly 40 years later, his career mark of 49 tackles for loss (259 yards) still stands as the school record. Benson recorded double-digit tackles for loss in each of his last three seasons and shares the single-game mark with six tackles for loss against Texas Tech in 1980.
A third-round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 1983, Benson played five seasons in the NFL and was a member of the Dolphins’ Super Bowl team in 1984. The Houston native was also selected to the Baylor All-Decade team of the 1980s.
