BU hits season-best .308 as Bears roll past previously undefeated Yellow Jackets

LINCOLN, NEB. – No. 20 Baylor volleyball bounced back in a big way Thursday afternoon, sweeping Georgia Tech, 3-0, at Bob Devaney Sports Center in the opening match of the Ameritas Challenge.

The Bears (5-1) put together their most efficient offensive performance of the season, hitting .308 with 47 kills to dispatch the previously undefeated Yellow Jackets (7-1). Baylor's .308 mark was its best since hitting .317 against Arkansas State in last season's NCAA Tournament.

Ksenia Rakhmanchik tied her season high with 19 kills and hit .333, while Bailey Warren delivered eight kills on .583 hitting. Nadiya Johnson added 10 kills while hitting a career-best .391, and Victoria Davis led the Bears with six blocks. Mya Hemmer added four blocks for the second-straight match.

Isabela Haggard orchestrated the Baylor attack with a season-high 37 assists, her most since recording 55 against Louisville in last season's NCAA Tournament. Tehani Ulufatu led the Bears with 10 digs, while Jules Hernandez made the first start of her career and recorded eight digs.

RUNDOWN
Baylor and Georgia Tech traded points early in the opening set before the Yellow Jackets took a 10-7 lead. The Bears steadily chipped away before a kill from Rakhmanchik tied the frame at 17-17, before Hemmer followed with another kill to put BU in front. Baylor stretched its advantage to 20-17 before Georgia Tech rallied to tie it at 21-21. Warren answered with a kill, and Davis put the Bears at set point with a kill before Georgia Tech's final attack error gave BU a 25-22 win and a 1-0 lead.

The Bears carried that momentum into the second set, opening with a 2-0 advantage before Georgia Tech pulled even at 3-3. Baylor then began to separate, using a 5-0 run behind a pair of Rakhmanchik aces, kills from Warren and a Taylor Crain ace to build a 14-8 lead. The Bears continued to apply pressure, pushing the margin to 19-11 before the Yellow Jackets made a late push. Rakhmanchik and Warren answered with three of Baylor's final four points, and Warren closed the set with a kill for a 25-18 victory.

Georgia Tech opened the third with a 3-1 advantage, but Baylor quickly settled in. The Bears used a 6-0 run to turn a 9-9 tie into a 15-9 lead, with Rakhmanchik recording two kills and Hemmer adding another during the surge. Baylor continued to control the frame, building its lead to 21-12 before the Yellow Jackets made a late push. Rakhmanchik delivered two more kills down the stretch, including the match-clinching point, as the Bears closed out the sweep, 25-16.

GAME NOTES

Baylor improved to 5-0 on the season and 204-24 under Ryan McGuyre when winning the opening set.
The Bears are now 94-2 in the McGuyre Era when hitting above .300.
Baylor hit a season-high .308, its best percentage since hitting .317 against Arkansas State in last season's NCAA Tournament.
Baylor's 47 kills came on 104 attacks, with the Bears committing just 15 attack errors.
Thursday marked Baylor's first 3-0 sweep over a team ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll since 2023.
Ksenia Rakhmanchik tied her season high with 19 kills and has now led Baylor in kills in all six matches this season.
Bailey Warren finished with eight kills while hitting a career-best .583.
Nadiya Johnson recorded her fourth double-digit-kill match of the season and hit a career-best .391.

The Bears continue the Ameritas Challenge Friday night with a showdown against No. 1 Nebraska at 7 p.m. CT at Bob Devaney Sports Center. Baylor will then close the tournament Saturday at 11 a.m. CT against New Mexico.
