- Induction:
- 1991
- Class:
- 1973
DANNY BRABHAM, Roswell, N.M. (Track, 1970-73) – 1991
Baylor’s first NCAA track All-American, when he placed second in the long jump at the 1971 NCAA Indoor Championships, Brabham’s school-record outdoor mark of 26-9 ½ still stands more than 50 years later. At the time, Brabham’s all-time-best leap was just three inches off Ralph Boston’s collegiate record.
Chris Gillis is the only other Baylor athlete to go over 26 feet outdoors, and Brabham did it eight times. His indoor best of 25-2 ¾ stood as the school record for 14 years and was good enough for the runner-up finish at the NCAA meet in Detroit, Mich.
Brabham also captured the national indoor long jump title in 1971 at the U.S. Track & Field Federation meet and added a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships as a senior in 1973, when he won his second consecutive SWC championship in the event.
After 15 years as a high school track coach in New Mexico and Texas, Brabham returned to his alma mater as an assistant under legendary coach Clyde Hart. In 28 years at Baylor, he coached 43 All-Americans, 36 school record-holders and a pair of NCAA national champions in triple jumper Stacey Bowers in 1999 and 400-meter hurdler Bayano Kamani in 2001.
