J.C. “ABE” BARNETT, Dallas, Texas (Basketball, 1932-34; Baseball, 1932-34; Track, 1933; Football, 1933) – 1984
Even in an era where college athletes played major sports, Barnett was a rare breed that played four sports – basketball, baseball, football and track. A native of Dallas, Texas, Barnett played on a state finalist football team at Forest High School.
Captain of the freshman Cub basketball team, Barnett was a second-team all-conference pick in 1931 and ’32, when the Bears captured the program’s first Southwest Conference championship with a 10-2 league record and a then-record 14 wins overall (14-4).
He was also a three-year letterman for the baseball team and earned one letter apiece in football and track. Barnett returned to his hometown as a football coach and teacher and was named the Oak Cliff Lions Club’s Lion of the Year.
