JOHNNY ARREAGA, San Antonio, Texas (Men’s Golf, 1958-60) – 2003

Inducted posthumously in 2003 as the first men’s golfer in the Baylor Hall of Fame, Arreaga was a three-year letterman who earned honorable mention All-America honors in 1960 when he helped the Bears to a ninth-place finish in their first-ever NCAA Championship. That held up as Baylor’s best national finish until the 2017 team made the match play quarterfinals and tied for fifth.

Almost 60 years later, Arreaga’s school-record round of 63 has been matched just once, by Garrett May in 2017. When he set the record in 1960, he aced the 18^th hole at Texas Tech. After a successful stint on the PGA Tour, Johnny served as a club pro at several clubs in Central Texas and was Baylor’s head golf coach in 1973-76.

Robert Duvall’s character in the movie, “Seven Days of Utopia” produced and co-written by Baylor graduate David Cook, was based on Arreaga.
