Schiessl led for Bears, reaching singles semifinals, doubles final

FORT WORTH, Texas – Baylor men's tennis concluded play at the ITA Texas Regional Championship on Monday, with Erik Schiessl advancing to the singles semifinals and teaming with Connor Van Schalkwyk to reach the doubles final.

Schiessl won five matches in the main singles draw before falling to Texas A&M's Ilia Snitari 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) in the semifinals, just one win away from clinching his spot in the NCAA Singles Championship. He opened with a 6-1, 6-3 win over SMU's Petar Teodorovic and followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Texas A&M's Lathan Skrobarcek. Schiessl then topped Texas Tech's Felipe Pagnacco 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 16 and rallied past Texas A&M's Amirkhamza Nasridinov 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, three of Baylor's four teams advanced to the quarterfinals. Schiessl and Van Schalkwyk, who received a first-round bye, defeated Lamar's Louis Drapeau and Dan Milburn 8-4, SMU's Teodorovic and Meethre Barot 8-4 and Texas' Tomasz Berkieta and Lucas Marionneau 8-5 to reach the semifinals. They then beat TCU's Matthieu Chambonniere and Maximus Dussault 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-5) to advance to the final but could not hold on against TCU's Albert Pedrico Kravtsov and Cooper Woestendick, falling 6-1, 6-3.

Louis Bowden also reached the round of 16, defeating Andres Delgadillo of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-1, 6-4 and Rice's Tommy Czaplinski 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 before falling to Texas' Oliver Ojakaar 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Devin Badenhorst, Drew Hedgecoe, Calvin Baierl and Radek Chodora each won a round of 64 match before exiting in the round of 32. Chodora came back to beat Texas Tech's Thomas Van Den Dooren 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round, and Baierl edged UIW's Agustin Salazar 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Hedgecoe and Gordon Gallagher both won their qualifying matches to earn spots in the main draw. Hedgecoe defeated UIW's Santiago Flyckt 6-1, 6-3, and Gallagher beat UTRGV's Miguel Bellorio Pinheiro 6-2, 6-2. After a three-set loss to SMU's Phoenix Weir in the main draw, Gallagher won twice in the consolation bracket, beating Lamar's Fabian Anthin 6-1, 6-2 and Rice's Noey Do 6-2, 6-2, before falling to UTSA's Timeo Bretin in the consolation quarterfinals.

Badenhorst and Baierl reached the quarterfinals with wins against Rice's Do and Arin Pallegar 8-3 and Texas A&M's Ritesh Patil and James Quattro 8-5 before losing 8-6 to Kravtsov and Woestendick. Bowden and Chodora won three straight matches, including an 8-5 victory against Texas Tech's Miguel Angel Machado and Pagnacco in the round of 16, before falling 8-6 to Chambonniere and Dussault in the quarterfinals.
