MELVIN BONNER, Van Vleck, Texas (Football, 1989-92) – 2007
Before the emergence of pass-happy offenses, Melvin Bonner established himself as one of the top wide receivers in program history, hauling in 92 catches for 1,984 yards (21.6-yard average) and 19 touchdowns, a mark that tied the school record set by Lawrence Elkins in the 1960s.
His career yards-per-reception mark still stands as the school record for players with a minimum of 50 receptions. As a senior, he caught 39 passes for 819 yards and a then-record 11 touchdowns.
Capping off his career, Bonner earned MVP honors in the Bears’ 20-15 win over 22nd-ranked Arizona and the Wildcats’ “Desert Storm” defense, scoring on TD grabs of 69 and 61 yards and finishing with 166 yards on five receptions. That was legendary coach Grant Teaff’s final game on the sidelines.
Named to Baylor’s All-Decade team of the 1990s, Bonner was drafted in the sixth round by Denver in 1993 and spent two years with the Broncos.
