RONNIE BULL, Bishop, Texas (Football, 1959-61) – 1976

Selected as Baylor’s first CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1961, Bull led the Bears in rushing in each of his three seasons and finished with 1,354 yards and scored a total of 22 touchdowns. Appearing on the cover of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine in 1961, Bull was named the Southwest Conference MVP by Houston Post as a junior in 1960 and All-American by Time magazine as a senior in ’61.

Playing for Hall of Fame coach John Bridgers, the Bull-led Bears knocked off 1958 national champion LSU in Baton Rouge and eventual SWC champion Arkansas in Fayetteville during the 1960 season, rising as high as No. 7 in the polls. He capped off his Baylor career by tallying 86 all-purpose yards and earning MVP honors in Baylor’s 24-9 win over 10th-ranked Utah State in the Gotham Bowl.

A first-round draft pick by both the AFL’s Dallas Texans and NFL’s Chicago Bears, Bull went the NFL route and played nine of his 10 seasons in Chicago. He rushed for 3,222 yards and nine touchdowns and added 172 receptions for 1,479 yards and five TDs in his career, earning NFL Rookie of the Year honors in 1962.

Bull, who runs a specialty advertising business in Chicago, was also inducted in the Texas High School Football and Chicagoland Sports halls of fame.
