LEAVING A LEGACY
In the changing world of college football, with the transfer portal, NIL and roster limits, a rags-to-riches story like Josh Cameron's may never happen again. But what a story it's been. A zero-star recruit when he signed with Baylor out of Cedar Park High School as a preferred walk-on in 2021, Cameron developed into an All-American punt returner, one of the top receivers in the country and a legitimate prospect for next month's NFL Draft.
THE BAYLOR CONNECTION
Somewhere, stashed away in Connie Powell Nichols' treasured keepsakes, is a picture of a young Caden Powell standing next to Scott Drew at a Baylor basketball camp. It was a connection that eventually brought the 6-foot-10 Powell back to Waco for his senior year of college basketball after stops at Wyoming and Rice.
LETTING HER LIGHT SHINE
And it was basketball that paved the way for Bella Fontleroy to come to Baylor four years ago. A five-star recruit at Kickapoo High School, she averaged 24 points and 11 rebounds as a senior in leading the Lady Chiefs to Missouri's Class 6 state championship game and earning Gatorade Player of the Year honors in the state.
FINDING FAITH AND FAMILY
After initially struggling with "imposter syndrome" as a competitive rider, Lauren Stebbins said she has seen her confidence grow "the more that I competed and the more time I had in the saddle, on our horses and away horses, too, and especially the more points that I won."
EMBRACE WACO
Making an immediate impact, Sterrett was one of Baylor's top two runners at four of his five meets as a freshman, finishing ahead of Wisconsin transfer Nick Hruskoci at the Big 12 Championships and NCAA South Central Regional to cap off the season.
FOLLOWING GOD'S LEAD
“This is super special. I can’t wait to go on this journey with my new family,” Essix said. “It’s just one match at a time, staying focused on who’s in front of us, and just knowing that we have the potential to do anything we set our minds to.”
GAME-CHANGER
“Ty is definitely a game-changer, but also someone who believed in the vision we had for the program. And not everybody was able to see that at first. After that first year, four wins, for her to say, ‘Hey, I believe in what you guys are doing, and I believe what you’re saying can truly happen.’ I’ll be forever grateful for Ty doing that.”
STICKING CLOSE TO HOME
Although she grew up in Baylor's backyard, Ella Perry had always envisioned going out of state for college. Maybe even one of the military academies with her sister at the Naval Academy and her brother going to West Point. With her dad deployed to Afghanistan and her siblings away for college, that left Ella and her mom at home, "just us two."
ON A MISSION
Kubacha went on a mission trip to Costa Rica in August, got baptized the next month and is now going through the eight-week iDisciple program for student-athletes who "want to take the next step in their faith and service to the Lord."
