WACO, Texas - First year Baylor Lady Bear head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson put her charges through their first practice of the 2000-2001 season this morning in the Ferrell Center. "I was pleased with the practice. Everyone worked extremely hard out there, you can't ask for any more than that," Mulkey-Robertson said.
The Lady Bears were without two of their 15 players for the first practice of the season. Neither freshman Heather Burrow or junior transfer Carla Mathisen participated in practice. Burrow, a 6-0 guard from Red Oak, watched practice from a stationary bicycle after rolling her right ankle earlier in the week. Junior transfer Carla Mathisen informed Coach Mulkey-Robertson that she will leave the team and return to her native Australia. Mathisen, a 5-8 guard, transferred to Baylor from Grayson County College where she averaged 13.7 points a game last season including 166 three-pointers.
According to Mulkey-Robertson, "The timing of Carla's leaving wasn't the greatest but I appreciate her honesty. She's 23 years old, it was going to take her three years to graduate from Baylor with a degree in psychology, she can graduate in a year and a half in Australia. She just wants to get on with her life. If her heart's not in it she would have been miserable and life's too short for that."
