Newton Named Big 12 Cross Country Athlete Of The Week

WACO, Texas - Baylor junior Kara Newton was named Big 12 Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week it was announced Monday by the conference office. Nebraska's Marcus Witter earned weekly honors on the men's side.
Newton finished first Friday night at the University of North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas. The Amarillo, Texas, native posted a time of 17 minutes, 23 seconds in the three-mile run for her first-career victory. That performance led the Bears to a first-place team finish. Newton finished 39 seconds ahead of the field.
Prior to last weekend, Newton's best-career finish was third at last season's Southwest Texas State Invitational. This was the fourth top 10 finish of Newton's career, two weeks ago, she finished tied for ninth at the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree.
Baylor will return to action this weekend, running Saturday morning at the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
