Kimeli Records Top-10 Finish in Season Debut

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Sparked by the return of two-time NCAA Championship qualifier Ruth Kimeli, the Baylor women placed 12th in the 31-team Southern Showcase at John Hunt Cross Country Park.

Making her season debut after missing the first two meets, Kimeli went out with the lead group from the start and never fell back, finishing ninth in a 5K time of 16:18.8. Alabama's Caren Kiplagat placed first individually with a time of 15:41.4 and helped the Crimson Tide win the team title comfortably.

In a crowded race with over 300 runners, junior Ella Perry was next for the Bears, finishing 55th overall in 17:56.3. Sophomore Eva Jacobsen (73rd, 18:08.0), Texas transfer Mackenize Browne (102nd, 18:28.2) and sophomore Rachel Haws (134th, 18:46.5) were BU's other scoring runners, with sophomore Rickeisha Simms finishing 140th at 18:49.1.

"On the women's side, Ruth led the way with a great finish on limited training," Baylor coach David Barnett said. "Ella and Eva had solid days as well, and I'm excited to get back to work in Waco."

Baylor's lone two runners on the men's side, junior Jack Sterrett was 76th in the 8K race with a time of 25:23.8, followed by senior Straton Miller in 135th at 25:58.9. They both finished in the top half of a field that included 304 runners.

"Both teams had some quality races," Barnett said. "And as we build towards bigger races down the road, the results will continue to improve. It was a great experience racing in a new environment, and I believe it will pay dividends in the future."

The Bears will take next week off before heading north for the Nike XC Town Twilight on Friday, Oct. 2, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind., site of the NCAA Championships in November.
