WACO, Texas - Baylor University has signed Lawrence Roberts III to a national letter of intent, head men's basketball coach Dave Bliss announced Friday.
Roberts, a 6-8, 220-pound forward from Lamar High School in Houston, Texas, inked with the Bears at a press conference at his high school Friday afternoon.
"We are thrilled that Lawrence Roberts has decided to attend and play basketball for Baylor University," Bliss said. "Not only is he an outstanding player, but he is an even better person."
Roberts averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks as a junior at Lamar in 2000. He was selected to all-Greater Houston and second-team all-state teams last year.
One of the most sought-after forwards in the nation, Roberts is rated the No. 5 prospect in the state of Texas by TexasHoops entering his senior season. Athlon Sports included Roberts on its list of the nation's Top 20 Power Forwards in its preseason publication. He was rated the No. 14 power forward nationally by FastBreak Recruiting.com.
"Lawrence's skills allow us to play him in a variety of positions," Bliss said. "He will have an instant impact on our basketball program."
Roberts was listed No. 86 on Lindy's magazine's Top 100 Seniors nationally, and was named by Street & Smith's College Basketball preview as a High Honorable Mention All-America selection.
Roberts is Baylor's third signee of the early signing period. He joins guards Dandrick Jones of Kimball High School in Dallas and Kenny Taylor of Willowridge High School in Sugar Land, Texas, as Baylor's signees.
