WACO, Texas - Baylor junior guard Chad Elsey was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week following his stellar performance in an 80-50 win at Cal State Fullerton last week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
In his Baylor debut last Saturday, his first collegiate action in more than a year, Elsey came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points in leading the Bears to a win over CSUF. Elsey, a transfer from Southern Methodist who sat out last season and the first semester this year establishing his eligibility, hit 4-of-5 3-point shots and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. He added five rebounds, four assists and two steals without a turnover.
Elsey is the third Bear player to be selected as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, and the first since teammate Terry Black last season (Nov. 30, 2000). Leon Morris earned the honor in 1997.
Elsey was honored along with Kansas sophomore Nick Collison, who was named Big 12 Player of the Week after averaging 21 points in two wins last week. The players are selected by a media panel which covers Big 12 men's basketball.
