Track Opens Indoor Season at Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. - Baylor's men's and women's track and field teams opened their indoor season here Saturday at the non-team scoring Oklahoma All Comers.
The highlights of the day for the Bears came in the men's 600-yards and the men's 800-meters, where Baylor lay claim to first place in both races. Damian Davis took the honors in the 600 with a time of one minute, 11.20 seconds, on his heels was teammate Floyd Thompson with a time of 1:12.76. In the 800, Baylor took the top three spots, led by Blair Mathews' 1:56.33 time. Barrett Hall and Robert Tannehill followed with times of 1:56.97 and 1:57.95, respectively.
Baylor also had a pair of second-place finishes on the men's side. Bayano Kamani placed second in the 400 meters with a mark of 48.32 seconds. In the one mile, Ferenc Bekesi's time of 4:17.87 was good enough for second place, Matt Chance took fifth in the mile at 4:21.77.
In other men's events, Josh Ward (8:45.54) finished fourth in the 3,000 meters, Michael Smith (8.15) finished third in the 60-meter hurdles, Sherman Harness (2.11 meters) finished third in the high jump, Jim Autenreith (5.10 meters) tied for third in the pole vault, and T.J. Henderson (4.95 meters) in the pole vault. Baylor also had two teams place in the 4x440-yard relay, the A team finishing third at 3:22.03 and the B team taking eighth at 3:26.38.
On the women's side, Baylor's day was highlighted by three fourth-place finishes. Megan McCoin took fourth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:04.83, and Cynthia Benson's 1.62-meter mark in the high jump was also fourth. In the 200 meters, Tamara Johnson finished fourth with a time of 24.92, while Ssereta Lafayette had a time of 25.33 for seventh place.
In the 60 meters, Lafayette was sixth at 7.63 seconds. Chava Demart placed fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 58.37. Lanie Miller (1:28.03) and Tiffany Wise (1:28.33) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 600 yards. Baylor's 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth with a time of 3:53.41.
Baylor will have plenty of time to prepare for its next meet, a Jan. 20 trip back to Norman for the Sooner Invitational.
