WACO, Texas - Behind 23 points from Chad Elsey, Baylor defeated Montana 77-57 Saturday afternoon at the Ferrell Center.
With the win, Baylor improved its record to 10-0, the school's best start in 89 years. The 1911-12 team opened the season 13-0.
Elsey hit a career-high seven 3-pointers to post his top scoring total as a Bear. The junior has played six games at Baylor after transferring from SMU last year.
Along with Elsey's performance, Baylor had three more players in double figure scoring. DeMarcus Minor (13), Terry Black (11), and Matt Sayman (11) provided offensive support for the Bears.
Baylor took a 37-28 halftime lead on Minor's 35-foot jumper as time expired. In the second half, the Bears used a 16-0 run, highlighted by three dunks from Black and 3-pointers by Elsey and Sayman, to push the lead to 60-38 with 10:01 remaining. The Grizzlies would come no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
The Bears shot 55 percent from the field, and have now shot at least 50 percent from the field in four straight games. The Baylor defense held Montana to just 38 percent shooting.
Baylor will try to remain undefeated as they host Texas Southern on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Ferrell Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m. CST.
