WACO, Texas - In rankings published in the June 26th issue of Women's Basketball Journal, first-year head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson's Baylor Lady Bear recruiting class is rated 19th in the nation by the All Star Girls Report.
The Lady Bears' recruiting class was bolstered considerably with the spring signing of JUCO All-American Sheila Lambert and Grayson County College (TX) teammates Carla Mathisen and Brooke McCormack.
Lambert, a 5-7 guard, comes to the Lady Bear program with impressive credentials. The Seattle native is a two-time NJCAA All-American, the first two-time JUCO All-American at Grayson County. In addition, she was a two-time first team all-region selection and was twice named North Texas Conference MVP. This past season Lambert averaged 23.2 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game. Coming out of Chief Stealth High School in Seattle, Lambert was a Parade All-American.
Mathisen, a native of Melbourne, Australia, is a 5-8 guard. She averaged 13.7 points a game this past season including 116 three-pointers. As the team's three-point specialist, Mathisen hit 116-of-281 from beyond the arc for 41.3 percent. She was named first team all-conference.
McCormack will be shoring up the post position for the Lady Bears. The 6-2 post, a native of Melbourne, Australia earned most improved honors for the Lady Vikings this past season and was also named first team all-conference. She averaged 9.3 points and 7.2 rebounds a game.
The trio led this season's Grayson team to a 36-1 record and a third place finish in the National Junior College Tournament. Their two-year record at Grayson was 68-2.
Signing early with Baylor were incoming freshmen: Heather Burrow-6-0, guard Red Oak, Texas, Chanelle Fox-5-11 guard, Spring, Texas, Kelly Sords-6-3, post, Austin, Texas, Jessika Stratton-5-9, guard, Colorado Springs, Colo.
"Considering our late start, it is exciting to have our first recruiting class ranked 19th by the All Star Girls Report," said Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson. "My staff and I will continue to work hard to bring positive recognition to Baylor women's basketball," added Mulkey-Robertson. "But, everyone knows, games are not won and lost by rankings. Rather, it's the skill, execution and efforts on the floor.
Only three Big 12 teams made the top 25. Texas Tech checked in at No.11, Kansas ranked 13th and Baylor #19.
