WACO, Texas - Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson announced today the hiring of Bill Brock as her first assistant and recruiting coordinator. Brock comes to Baylor from Grayson County (Texas)College (GCC).
Brock has spent the past 13 years developing one of the most successful and respected women's basketball programs in the junior college ranks.
He inherited a program in 1987-88 that had never won a conference championship and promptly led the Lady Vikings to their first-ever North Texas Conference title and a top 25 national ranking. Grayson continued to build on that success and proceeded to win 10 conference championships, two regional championships and two national tournament berths (1996 & 2000). During Brock's tenure, the Lady VIkings were a mainstay in the top 10 national poll. His cumulative coaching record at GCC is 371-50 and was highlighted by this year's 36-1 season and a third place finish at the 2000 NJCAA Tournament.
Not only have Brock's teams been successful on the basketball court, they've been productive in the classroom as well. His emphasis on academics and graduation of players has allowed over 60 GCC student-athletes to receive scholarships and continue their basketball careers at four-year institutions.
Brock's program at GCC has produced 10 Northern Texas Conference MVP's and nine all-Americans.
Brock's efforts at GCC have also been recognized by his peers as he was voted Conference Coach-of-the-Year nine times and Regional Coach-of-the-Year twice. He was also recognized in 1996 as the National Junior College Coach-of-the-Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Bill's wife, Janice, is a registered nurse and they have two daughters: Danika (23) and Whitney (16). Brock will assume his duties at Baylor on May 15.
"I am excited to be joining the staff of Coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson and becoming a member of the Lady Bears basketball family at Baylor University. With the vision of Athletic Director Tom Stanton and the commitment of the Baylor administration, I believe the future is very promising for the women's basketball program. The Big 12 Conference is one of the nation's premier basketball conferences and it's our goal to accept the immediate challenge of improving Baylor's position in the league standings." said Brock.
"I am thrilled to have Bill Brock join the Baylor Lady Bear staff," said Mulkey-Robertson. "With his winning background and his recruiting contacts, he will be so valuable in our efforts to take this program to new heights. It's good to have my staff complete," she added.
