WACO, Texas - Pinch-hitter Kelly Shoppach slugged a two-run single to spark five runs in the sixth inning and lead the Baylor baseball team to a 7-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday night.
With the win, the Bears improve to 36-13, while the Islanders fall to 23-29. Starter Jared Theodorakos (2-0) earned the win for Baylor, scattering five hits and one run over seven innings of work. He also struck out nine batters and walked just one. Islanders starter Larry Olivarez (4-6) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in five innings.
The Islanders got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first, but Baylor took the lead with a run in the third and in the fourth.
In the sixth inning, Matt Williams and Ron Zboril walked to put runners at first and second and Preston Underdown reached base on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Steve Dorneman then walked, which plated Williams. Shoppach hit a two-run shot to left field to bring in pinch runner Tim Hartshorn and Underdown. Just one batter later, Ross Bennett slugged a two-run shot to give Baylor a 7-1 lead and put the game away for good.
Baylor hosts Kansas for a three-game Big 12 conference series this weekend. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Friday.
