WACO, Texas - Jace Brewer, Matt Williams and Chris Durbin each smacked home runs in the first inning to lead the Baylor baseball team to a 7-3 victory over Southwest Texas Tuesday night.
With the win, the fifth-ranked Bears improve to 35-13 on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 25-24. Baylor has beaten Southwest Texas in all three meetings this season.
Freshman righty Scott Lehnhoff (2-0) earned the win, scattering three runs on four hits over six innings of work. Bobcat starter Mike Huddleston took the loss, giving up five earned runs on three hits in just one-third inning.
Although Southwest Texas got on the board first with two runs, Baylor responded with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Jaime Bubela walked and then stole second. Time Hartshorn also walked to put runners in scoring position. Three-hole hitter Jace Brewer then slugged a three-run homer to left field to put the Bears up 3-2. Williams and Durbin, hitting fifth and sixth, each smacked home runs to give the Bears a 5-2 lead.
Baylor scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning, while Lehnhoff and reliever Kyle Edens held the Bobcats scoreless from the third inning through the end of the game.
Baylor hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark.
