WACO, Texas - Northwestern State gave Baylor a scare Sunday afternoon, but the Bears exploded for five runs in the seventh to take a come-from-behind win over the Demons, 9-7.
Jaime Bubela keyed the seventh-inning rally for the Bears with a leadoff walk. After Bubela stole second and went to third on the catcher's error, Jace Brewer tripled him home to cut the Demons' lead to 6-5. Matt Williams followed with a sacrifice fly to drive home Brewer and tie the game. Ross Bennett doubled and scored on a Kelly Shoppach single to give Baylor the lead, and Mike Huggins' first collegiate home run, a two-run-shot, put the game away.
"Offensively, it's early and we're still looking for some guys to settle in," Baylor head coach Steve Smith said, "but hitting is contagious. Mike Huggins came off the bench and hit the ball well."
Josh Scott started the game for the Bears and was dominant early, striking out eight in his four innings. Scott also allowed three runs on six hits, however, and came out after facing one batter in the fifth. Kyle Edens (1-0) came in and pitched three innings in relief, allowing three runs but benefitting from the Bears' offensive in the seventh inning. Zane Carlson, in his first appearance for the Bears, finished out the final two innings for the save, striking out two and allowing one run.
Jason Slanina started for Northwestern State, but did not get the decision. Clifton Glidewell (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in 1.1 innings.
"We walked the first guy [in the seventh] and then committed two errors," Northwestern State coach John Cohen said. "We just couldn't throw strike one."
Brewer, Bennett, Shoppach and Underdown each had two hits for the Bears, and Brewer, Williams, and Huggins had two RBIs apiece. A crowd of 2,326 watched the game at the Baylor Ballpark.
The Bears are now 2-0 on the season, while Northwestern State falls to 1-2. Baylor next travels to UMHB on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. game.
