WACO, Texas - Freshman Ross Bennett went 3-for-4 with five RBI to lead the Baylor baseball team to a 6-4 win over Texas A&M before 3,986 fans Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears improve to 15-3 overall, 5-1 in the Big 12, while the Aggies fall to 9-10 overall, 3-3 in conference play.
Sophomore Justin Taylor (2-0) got the win for the Bears after relieving starter Josh Scott in the fourth inning. Taylor scattered three hits in three innings of work. Freshman Zane Carlson earned his fourth save, striking out two Aggies with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning. Aggie starter Khalid Ballouli (2-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits in five innings.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bears got on the board in the second inning when Kelly Shoppach reached base after being hit by the pitcher. Chris Durbin then reached base on a fielder's choice to put runners in scoring position. With two outs, Bennett doubled to bring in both runners and put Baylor up 2-0.
In the third, it was Texas A&M's turn. Designated hitter Rusty Meyer walked and David Evans singled to put runners at first and second. Shortstop Ryan Wardinsky smacked a three-run homer to centerfield to give the Aggies a 3-2 lead.
Baylor rebounded with a run in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth, both batted in by Bennett. Aggie catcher Jason Gremminger slugged a solo home run in the eighth to cut the Bears' lead to one.
The Bears won all three games in the series, marking the first time Texas A&M has been swept by Baylor in a three-game series since 1991.
Baylor hits the road Tuesday for a two-game series at Ole Miss. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
