AUSTIN, Texas - Jace Brewer slugged a three-run double in the seventh inning to lead the Baylor baseball team to an 11-8 win over Big 12 rival Texas Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears improve to 34-13 overall and 17-7 in the Big 12 to take over the conference lead. Texas falls to 34-11 and 16-7 in league play.
Baylor reliever Justin Taylor (4-0) earned the win, giving up just one run and two hits in four innings of work. Texas starter Ryan France (3-4) took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits in three and one-third innings.
The Bears struck early, scoring two runs in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Jaime Bubela doubled to right field and was brought in by Mike Huggins' double to right center. Matt Williams then reached base on a fielder's choice to plate Huggins.
After holding the Longhorns scoreless for two innings, Texas scored one run in the third. Baylor countered with four runs in the fourth. Brewer and Preston Underdown walked to put runners in scoring position. Anthony Hensley smacked an RBI single and Bubela drove a run in with a single to right field. Hensley came in on an error and Huggins singled in Bubela to put the Bears up 6-1 in the fourth.
Texas countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Baylor rallied with four runs in the seventh and a run in the ninth.
