WACO, Texas - Steve Dorneman smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Baylor baseball team to a 6-5 win over Texas before a record crowd of 4,876 Friday night.
With the win, the Bears improve to 33-12 overall and 16-6 in the Big 12, while the Longhorns fall to 33-10 and 15-6 in league play.
Baylor starter Chad Hawkins (8-4) earned the win, scattering nine runs on five hits over seven innings of work. Closer Zane Carlson came in to get the third out in the eighth and struck out two Texas batters in the ninth to get his 12th save of the season. Longhorns starter D.J. Jones took the loss, giving up six earned runs on ten hits in six-and-a-third innings.
Texas jumped on the board in the first inning when leadoff hitter Tommy Nicholson singled to left and advanced on a single by Todd West and came in on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Ontiveros.
Baylor responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. Jace Brewer singled to centerfield and Mike Huggins singled to left to put runners in scoring position. Designated hitter Matt Huggins slugged an RBI single to center and Preston Underdown followed with single to left to drive in Huggins.
The Longhorns rallied with two runs in both the fourth and the sixth innings to take a 5-3 lead before Dorneman's clutch hit gave Baylor the lead for good.
